We do not provide dial-in access; you must already have Internet access in your local area. If you have a FTP Account, you must connect to our system using FTP (common versions of this are WS_FTP, CuteFTP, and Fetch), the "File Transfer Protocol". This allows you to store and retrieve files, as well as change permissions, create and remove directories, and a bit more. If you have any other account type, you may use either FTP or Telnet. Telnet will give you direct access to your files through the Unix command prompt (known as the "shell"). Making proper use of the Telnet login requires at least some knowledge of Unix commands. Regardless of the method you use to reach the server, you will need to know your server name (or IP address), your login name, and your current password. All of this information are supplied in your account-ready message. Your login name, also known as your "username", is the two to eight-letter identifier that usually is equal to tha domain name you selected. It is used for mail, Telnet and FTP access. An initial password was assigned to you randomly when your account was created. You can change it using the passwd command. Some users have some problems using the Windows 95 Telnet client with pico. If you have any problems, please use a different telnet software (we use NetTerm without problems). Go to www.tucows.com to download a different Telnet client. |
