We use the HTTP 1.1 extension to host more than one domain over the same IP address. We call these accounts Hosted Accounts.
They are the more economical way to have an account at IperWeb with your own domain name.

Hosted accounts are perfect when:

  1. Your website doesn’t need our pre-configured CGI script
  2. You don’t need a mail domain (infact Hosted Account can’t handle e-mail aliasing/forwarding)
  3. You don’t need a telnet account.

Every Hosted Account has:

  • Domain name (registration fees aren’t included)
  • FTP Account. You can update your site 24h/24h
  • POP3 Account or Mail forward. You can choice to use our mail server or to get your mail forwarded to another address
  • FULL CGI support (your scripts must end with a .cgi suffix)
  • Server Side Includes
  • Microsoft FrontPage 98 support
  • Weekly statistics
  • Access to your log

Name-based vs. IP-based virtual hosts

While the approach with IP-based virtual hosts works very well, it is not the most elegant solution, because a dedicated IP address is needed for every virtual host and it is hard to implement on some machines. The HTTP/1.1 protocol contains a method for the server to identify what name it is being addressed as. Apache 1.1 and later support this approach as well as the traditional IP-address-per-hostname method.

The benefits of using the new name-based virtual host support is a practically unlimited number of servers, ease of configuration and use, and requires no additional hardware or software. The main disadvantage is that the client must support this part of the protocol. The latest versions of most browsers do, but there are still old browsers in use who do not.

Netscape 2 or higher and Microsoft Internet Explorer 3 or higher fully supports the Name-base vistrual host approach
